Guwahati: Many on the lines UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa appears to be preparing to embark on the wave of name changes in the state.
Assam, led by the BJP, will launch a government portal to search for suggestions, proposals from citizens on the issue of renaming the village, street and other places. The portal will be open to citizens over the next two months.
Based on the suggestions received from citizens, the deputy commissioner of each district will decide on the name change of the place.
Notably, after taking power, the BJP-led government withdrew the name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi from Orang National Park. The park is one of seven national parks and three Rhino Habitats.
“The decision to restore the original name of Orang National Park was taken following requests from the state’s adivasis groups,” the government reasoned at the time.
In fact, the former Congressional government led by Tarun Gogoi also changed the name from Assam to Asom because the word “Assam” does not appear in the Assamese dictionary.
