Australians appoint newbie, choose to play in ODI

Hannah Darlington makes her series opener ODI debut in Australia against India in Mackay, where Meg Lanning chose to play.

The hosts, looking to extend a record-breaking 24-game winning streak in the format, named an inexperienced attack due to the forced absence of Jess Jonassen and Megan Schutt.

Darlington is 19, while fast bowler Darcie Brown is 18 playing her second ODI.

Darlington is the third Indigenous woman to play cricket for Australia, following in the footsteps of Ashleigh Gardner and Faith Thomas.

Gardner handed his cap to the Sydneysider on Tuesday morning.

“Hannah Darlington is coming in today. Really exciting times for her, I think she’s going to play a very important role for us,” Lanning said after winning the draw.

India named three ODI debutants including Yastika Bhatia, Meghna Singh and Richa Ghosh in their XI.

Australia XI: Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy, Meg Lanning (capt), Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Georgia Wareham, Hannah Darlington, Darcie Brown.

India XI: Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Yastika Bhatia, Mithali Raj (captain), Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Pooja Vastrakar, Sneh Rana, Jhulan Goswami, Meghna Singh, Poonam Yadav.
