Auto MLCC’s annual demand for 2021 is expected to reach 449 billion parts, with potential for further growth next year, as suppliers compete for automotive market share, TrendForce says

Taipei, Taiwan – (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – The order-to-bill ratios for various MLCC vendors as well as quarterly shipments for 4Q21 are now showing signs of declining, according to the latest TrendForce surveys. Not only has the demand for consumer electronics slowed, but ODM customers have also made their sourcing activities easier due to issues such as the global chip shortage, inadequate component availability and power supply rationing. China. On the other hand, demand on the automotive market has remained strong since 3Q21. Automotive applications have therefore become a major focus of attention in the latest product planning and supplier capacity expansion efforts of MLCC. With these high-demand applications, the annual automotive market demand for MLCC for 2021 is expected to reach 449 billion parts, an increase of 20% year-on-year.

TrendForce further reports that the growth of the electric vehicle market and improvements in ADAS specifications have resulted in a doubling of automotive MLCC consumption. While the electrified transmission of electric vehicles and high safety requirements present a high barrier to entry for MLCC vendors, these barriers in turn have also increased the ASP and profitability of MLCC products. As a result, the automotive electronics industry has increased its annual demand for MLCC to double digits in recent years. In particular, an analysis of different vehicles and their respective MLCC consumption reveals the following: a conventional EV requires 2.2 times the MLCC usage of a conventional gasoline vehicle, an EV equipped with ADAS requires 2 , 7 times and a standalone EV requires up to 3.3 times.

When it comes to MLCC suppliers, Japanese companies such as Murata, TDK, and Taiyo Yuden continue to dominate the MLCC automotive market. These suppliers will expand their production capabilities for automotive applications at overseas facilities in China, the Philippines and Malaysia next year, with powertrains, ADAS and connected systems among the most important of the aforementioned applications. Korean company Samsung, meanwhile, specializes in powertrain applications by leveraging the small form factor, high capacity, and high voltage of its MLCC offerings. Finally, Taiwanese suppliers, such as Yageo and Walsin, are actively investing in the development of automotive products and High-Q products for RF applications to increase their presence in the infotainment system market and the kiosk market. charging for electric vehicles.

By 2022, TrendForce expects annual automotive demand for MLCC to reach 562 billion parts, a 25% year-over-year increase, mainly attributed to the continued electrification of vehicles. As the global implementation of carbon-neutral policies and the excellent commercial performance of Tesla vehicles lead to widespread adoption of electric vehicles, several countries have successively set concrete dates for the cessation of sales of gasoline vehicles. Therefore, electric vehicles are gradually becoming not only the dominant option in the automotive market, but also the main driver for the future growth of the MLCC industry.
