Community disagrees on the proposal to change the name of the road to Madison | Davidson County

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – People disagree over the name of a Davidson County road in the Madison area.

There is a proposal to change the name of Woodruff Street and it has become controversial.

David McMurry was a member of Rotary and served on several boards of directors and volunteered with numerous nonprofit organizations. He is known for his work with LGBT people in Nashville and the Madison Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce.

So, for many, the idea of honoring the late civil servant by renaming Woodruff Street to David McMurray Way, seemed like a great idea.

However, not everyone agrees.

“There has been no notification about it. No one asked the public what their thoughts were or if they had any suggestions, ”said Nathan Massey, who also served on the Madison Rivergate area chamber of commerce.

Massey had a long list of other people he thought should be considered for this honor, people like Lonnie Sadler.

“He was elected captain and first African-American captain in the history of Vanderbilt University in his senior year in 1975,” said Lonnie Sadler Jr., son of Sadler.

Sadler then coached and mentored hundreds of young children.

“He emphasized education rather than athletics,” Sadler said.

When it comes to renaming Woodruff Street, the difference in their minds is that Sadler was born and raised in Madison.

“If you’re going to start renaming the streets, it should be someone from the community,” Sadler said.

Chamber of Commerce President Laura Knotts sent a letter supporting the name change to David McMurry Way.

They said they wanted to name this street after McMurry because it’s so close to most of the nonprofits he’s worked with.

“I know some people didn’t know David very well, or may have guesses about him, or disagree with his lifestyle, but he has spent countless hours promoting Madison and working with our organizations at nonprofit, ”Knotts said. “He devoted all of his free time to promoting and improving our community. While we would like to honor it now, we would be happy to honor more citizens of Madison by renaming other streets in the future. “

The resolution to change the name of the street is presented to the metro planning committee on Thursday. is now with you on the go! Get the latest updates and videos, 4WARN weather forecasts, weather radar, special investigation reports, sports headlines and more from News4 Nashville.
