Aruna Chaudhary is a senior leader of the Punjab Congress and Deputy Chief Minister with Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the government of Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. She is a member of the 15th Punjab Legislative Assembly (MLA) and represents the constituency of Dina Nagar. She is the daughter-in-law of four-time MP Jai Muni Chaudhary.

Chaudhary currently heads the Ministry of Social Security, Women and Child Development in Punjab.

A report says sources close to Punjabic Congress leader Navjot Sidhu – whose hostile row with Amarinder Singh precipitated this crisis – were quoted as saying “whatever name is agreed upon for the chief minister, he will be accompanied by two deputies and the names of them will depend on who is appointed chief minister ”.

Meanwhile, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) nominated Sukhjinder Randhawa for the chief ministerial post. However, Randhawa said the Congressional High Command has yet to finalize the name of the state’s highest post. “So far no name has been chosen. Party observers have spoken to all MPs and asked for names. Now a consensus will be made and the name will be announced. Randhawa was the Minister of Prison and Cooperation Department in Amarinder Singh’s government.

Prior to Randhawa, sources said, Congressman and senior leader Ambika Soni was offered the post of chief minister of the Punjab by the party’s high command, which declined to accept the offer. A Congress veteran and Gandhi loyalist, Soni declined the offer citing health concerns.
