Eddie Jones names 21 unselected players for 34-player training camp in England | England rugby union team

Even by his usual standards, Eddie Jones gave a vigorous spin to the selection wheel by naming 21 uncapped players to a 34-man squad for the England summer series. In the absence of his contingent of British and Irish Lions and with several senior players rested, Jones is challenging all new faces to have an instant impact ahead of this month’s A game against Scotland and the July Tests against the United States and Canada.

Perhaps the fastest promotion is from 20-year-old center Max Ojomoh, who started a Premiership game during his brief first-class career and is the son of former international striker Steve Ojomoh. With Tom de Glanville also hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps, Phil, the team roster is evocative read for Bath and England fans of a certain vintage.

Other emerging names include the young Leicester backline pair of Dan Kelly, who won’t turn 20 until next week, and Freddie Steward, promising London Irish lock Chunya Munga, Bath flanker Miles Reid and the Newcastle winger Adam Radwan. There will also be widespread glee for Wasps winger Josh Bassett, whose consistent club-level tryout record brought a deserved first call at the age of 29.

Jones is adamant there remains a big gap between club rugby and the test arena, but he will be watching closely to see which people can respond positively to this challenge. He also clearly trusts the judgment of former England strikers-turned-coaches Dean Richards and Steve Borthwick, with Newcastle and Leicester providing practically a third of the squad, including home Falcons strikers Trevor Davison and Jamie Blamire as well as the 19-year-old. -old Tiger George Martin, who was selected in this year’s Six Nations.

Thank you for your opinion.

All will be invited to fill the substantial voids left by players such as George Ford, Jonny May, Ben Youngs, Jonathan Joseph and Will Stuart, who have been offered the summer after a few demanding seasons.

The number of absentees will potentially increase, with Jones waiting for the Premiership and Championship play-offs to unfold before deciding how many players from Bristol, Exeter, Sale, Harlequins and Saracens will be added.

Either way, management are hopeful that the latest group of young English talent will step up as impressively as Tom Curry and Sam Underhill did under similar circumstances in Argentina four years ago.
