Four Bears named ITA All-Americans

TEMPE, Arizona – Four male tennis players from Baylor have been named the 2021 ITA All-Americans, as the organization officially announced on Monday.

Adrien Boitan (simple), Constantine Frantzen (double) and Matias Soto (singles) each received their first career award, while Sven Lah (double) is now a two-time winner.

“The achievement of being named an All-American in tennis is one of the rarest and highest honors one can get in college. These four have shown incredible consistency. this year that has helped propel and propel this team to magnificent success all season long, ”said head coach Michael woodson. “They deserve this recognition, and I couldn’t be more proud of each of these young men.”

The quartet represents the 23 of Baylorrd and 24e single laureates and 17e and 18e duplicates the selections in the program history.

Boitan, a sophomore in third year, achieved All-American status after reaching the NCAA Singles Championship semifinals. The Constanta, Romania native finished the season 12th overall in the country with a 21-6 record that included 13 wins over ranked opponents. In his last 21 games, Boitan has had an impressive 15-2 with 10 ranked wins and has gone undefeated in the playoffs.

“Adrian really rose to the challenge of being the number one singles player for a national caliber team, improving with every practice and game. His success throughout the year is a direct reflection of the efforts. that he made to make sure he delivered the goods for the time whenever they took the yard together, “said Woodson.” I am so proud of what he has accomplished and I know that the best is yet to come. “

Playing primarily in second place in singles, Soto went 20-7 in his fourth-year junior campaign and automatically earned All-America recognition as a 9-16 ranked participant in the NCAA Singles Championship. . After losing in the first round of the individual competition, Soto finished the season in 10th place after scoring 11-7 against ranked opponents.

“Matias has been a mainstay in the top two places of our singles and doubles roster throughout his time at Baylor, so seeing him run a top 10 singles campaign is both deserved and deserved,” said Woodson said. “He’s become more and more consistent as a leader on and off the field for the Bears, and I’m excited to see where he continues to lead us. “

Lah received All-American notoriety for the second time in his career after being seeded 5-8 in the NCAA Doubles Championship alongside Frantzen. After a 20-13 fourth-year junior season, Lah became BU’s third doubles player with at least two All-America awards, joining three-time winner Benedikt Dorsch and two-time recipient Matija Zgaga. Lah has gone 16-10 with Frantzen this season, placing 9th in the Oracle / ITA regular season standings.

For the first time in his illustrious career, Frantzen has been named All-American. The fifth-year senior captain holds the BU’s all-time academic record with 112 career doubles wins. Frantzen and Lah finished the year in fifth place in the last poll of 2021.

“Sven and Coni produced some of the best doubles in college tennis in the shortened 2020 season, so I couldn’t wait to see them return to work in 2021. The pandemic has delayed them due to injuries and separate times, but the work they did together throughout the spring was inspiring and led to some amazing performances when the lights were shining brightest and the team needed them most, ”said Woodson. “Their journey to the national semi-finals matched the level they have brought all season. Their competitive spirit will be missed as a team, but I know Cuneo has great things to bring to this world both on and off the pitch, while Sven has great goals for him and our team with his. last year in 2022. “

The Bears ended the 2021 campaign as NCAA National Finalists and ITA National Indoor Championship finalists with a record 34 wins during the year. For the first time in team history, BU had representatives in the NCAA Championships Semifinals in Singles and Doubles (Boitan, Frantzen / Lah).
