Benetton Rugby back rower Michele Lamaro has been named Italy’s new captain.
Head coach Kieran Crowley has announced the appointment of the 23-year-old who has just seven caps under his belt at a players meeting in Verona.
Lamaro, who is in his fourth season with the Treviso-based squad, became his club’s co-captain last July after leading his country at the U17, U18 and U19 levels.
The flanker, who made his international debut last November, becomes one of the youngest leaders of the Azzurri and follows in the footsteps of a number of former rowers – including the legendary Sergio Parisse – who have worn the captain’s armband .
Lamaro will lead the squad for the first time on Saturday 6 November when the All Blacks travel to Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
It couldn’t happen, could it? ?? ????????
“It would be an intriguing and timely twist given he was recently excluded from Eddie Jones’ England squad.” https://t.co/BW3VHVBfCT

Crowley said that Lamaro’s leadership skills and experience were important factors in his appointment to replace Luca Bigi.
“We have a group of very good young players who made their national team debuts not too far apart,” he said.
“The choice fell on the one who has shown great growth from a technical and leadership point of view and who, after the selection of the young people of the FIR, from this season will also lead one of the two federal franchises.
“I would like to thank Luca Bigi for the approach he had and for the work accomplished as captain. He will continue to be an important part of the group of leaders from now on. “
Lamaro said he was proud to receive the role and pointed to the evolution of the style of captain that has taken place.
“It is a great pride for me to receive the rank of captain,” he said. “I have had illustrious predecessors in this role and I will do my best to help Italy achieve their goals.
“The role of the captain has changed over time. He has grown from a single figure to a group of experienced players who support the management of the team. I think being able to have more benchmarks for all team members is a fundamental aspect of team sport.
