Cienega is 26-4 and is ranked No. 1 in 5A men’s volleyball in the state entering the playoffs and senior outside hitter/center tackle Derrick Vargas is a big reason for the Bobcats’ dominance.

Vargas, 6-foot-5, is ranked No. 17 nationally in hit percentage at .444, according to MaxPreps, and he leads the Bobcats in kills (224) and kills per set (3.0).

Cienega was undefeated (8-0) in their 5A South matches in April with Vargas one of the captains.

Also during the month, he recorded hitting percentages of .600 against Sabino, .700 against Williams Field, and .455 against Ironwood Ridge and Catalina Foothills. He also averaged 3.1 kills per set.

His dominance in April for the top 5A team in the state earned him Jet Sports Training Male Athlete of the Month honors.
