Kanye West has filed court documents to officially change his name to Ye.
In the case filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, West aims to distill his full name – Kanye Omari West – to just Ye, with no other first or last name, citing “personal reasons.” A judge will now need to approve the filing.
He previously announced the name change in 2018, writing on Twitter that he was “the official being. [sic] known as Kanye West. I am you”.
Explaining the change in a radio interview that year, he said, âI believe ‘you’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible it means you. So I am you, I am us, this is us. He said his name “changed from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye – just reflecting our good, our evil, our confusion, everything.” Ye was the title of the studio album he released that year.
West is set to release his tenth studio album, Donda, this week after a reading at Soldier Field in his hometown of Chicago on Thursday. The album has been overdue for weeks, since it hosted another playing event at an Atlanta sports arena on July 22. He continued to work on the album in a makeshift studio and arena living space.
He garnered more attention this week after Canadian rapper Drake stoked a long-simmering animosity between the two, rapping on Trippie Redd’s new song, Betrayal: “Forty-five, forty-four, let’s go. the go / You don’t change a thing for me, it’s set in stone. âWest responded by briefly posting a screenshot of a group text chat that appeared to be addressing Drake, reading:â I live for this⦠you will never get over it. I promise. “
In February, West and his wife Kim Kardashian West announced they would divorce after nearly seven years of marriage.
