When Prince William and Kate Middleton walk through the gates of Kensington Palace to live out their lives, it’s no small feat. Constantly surrounded by security details, royal fans are always on the lookout for the possibility of spotting their familiar faces. So what do they do when they want to fly under the radar? They use secret codenames. And Kate Middleton’s secret codename is particularly cool, kind of like a mid-century comic book character, in fact. Prince William’s is very good too, of course. just not as good.
When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travel privately, The Express reports, they do so under different names. Prince William reportedly used the name Danny Collins, possibly keeping those DC initials in case he got a little confused about his alias. And Kate Middleton’s pseudonym also bears the initials DC. She would have traveled as Daphne Clark. Which sounds like the alias of a WWII superhero fighting injustice in the world, if you ask me.
Perhaps using her secret codename also gives her the chance to embody a whole secret identity as Daphne Clark. Although in truth, it seems more likely that the rest of us would like the chance to live life as our secret identity.
While Daphne Clark is obviously a very cool secret codename, Middleton also uses another, more obvious alias when out in the world as a somewhat private citizen. Or at least she did at the start of her marriage to Prince William when the couple lived at Anglesey Cottage in Wales. According to the story, Middleton wanted to put a wetsuit on hold in 2012 until she could come back and buy it. The sun reports that she was not recognized by the seller, who asked her name. “Mrs. Cambridge,” she replied without flinching. What a thrill it must have given her to go unnoticed for a moment.
Her eldest son, Prince George, 9, has also given himself a secret code name in the past. When he met a dog walker in the park in 2019 with his grandmother Carole Middleton, he told her his name was “Archie”. Just four months later, her aunt Meghan Markle gave birth to her cousin Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor. Maybe he was just trying out the name for good measure.
Or inventing a secret life to accompany his mother, AKA Daphne Clark.
