MARIANNA, Fla. (WMBB) — The Jackson County School Board voted Tuesday to officially name the road leading to the Marianna baseball field in honor of MLB catcher and former Bulldogs Jeff Mathis.
Mathis has played in MLB for 17 years and now plays for the Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves.
He grew up in Marianna and played for the Bulldogs from 1997-2001 and was part of the 1999 team that won a state title.
Mathis said that having his hometown honor him in such a big way was awesome.
“It’s something that I didn’t expect, and then when I heard that I was very moved and honored, and that the children were talking about me and that my name was still being mentioned there, that means a ton, it’s a special place to be, it’s where it all started, where it all started and just something, a place I’ll always call home and be proud of,” Mathis said. .
Currently, Mathis likes being a dad, but he may have a little more to play professionally.
“A little up in the air if I have to play again, I haven’t announced my retirement, I still have a little fire in me and I’m still trying to get back in shape and keep myself in shape if someone one comes one I call, I’m still training and I have two little girls to keep me busy,” Mathis said.
