oneplus: OnePlus could “borrow” the name of an Oppo smartphone

OnePlus recently launched its 2022 flagship – OnePlus 10 Pro 5G – in India. In addition to this, the company is also said to be working on OnePlus 10R. Now it looks like the company is considering borrowing a name from Oppo.
Well-known tipster Digital Chat Station recently posted a post on Chinese microblogging website Weibo revealing the specs of an upcoming OnePlus smartphone.
According to the tweet, the smartphone will be powered by MediaTek The Dimensity 8100 chipset supports 150W fast charging. Apart from that, the phone will also feature a 50MP sony IMX766 primary sensor. But, more importantly, the tipster claimed that the specs are of the smartphone named OnePlus ace.
On the other hand, the leaked specs of the alleged OnePlus Ace smartphone match the leaked specs of the OnePlus 10R. This leads to confusion as to whether these are two different smartphones or the same smartphones with different names for different locations.
Reports also suggest that OnePlus may keep the Ace moniker for China and launch the OnePlus 10R globally.
Meanwhile, the smartphone has also surfaced on Weibo via an official source. Recently, OnePlus executive Liu Fengshuo used the OnePlus Ace smartphone for a post. However, the post was quickly deleted.
On top of that, leaked images of the alleged OnePlus Ace have already surfaced, revealing the phone’s camera design which coincidentally looks identical to the real me GT Neo 3. Apparently, the GT Neo 3 also matches the leaked spec sheet of the OnePlus smartphone.
That’s not it, the Ace moniker was part of Oppo’s line of smartphones. The company launched the Oppo Reno Ace in 2019 and followed it up with Oppo Reno Ace 2 in 2020. However, the company later dropped the moniker and never launched the Ace 2 successor.
The whole OnePlus-Oppo merger definitely gets more confusing over time. It is possible that OnePlus will launch another smartphone or that the Ace monkeir will only arrive in China and the OnePlus 10R for the rest of the world. It looks like we won’t be able to figure it out until the phone arrives.
