OSC enables on-demand HPC for an automotive engineering company

In motorsport, vehicle designers are constantly on the lookout for even the smallest amount of time to save through smart engineering – but as the fruits at hand are ripped off, these advancements become harder and harder to achieve. . Today, D2H Advanced Technologies – an engineering company with efforts in sports like NASCAR – is working with the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) to use supercomputing to supercharge its design work.

Much of this is computational fluid dynamics (CFD) work, which studies the way air flows through and around the various components of a motorsport vehicle. “Every millimeter cell around the car, we get the pressure, the speed, the vortex, all of these parameters that we need to tell what’s going on so that we can then make changes to the car,” said Darren Davies. , CEO of D2H. Advanced technologies. “Our models are orders of magnitude larger and more refined – some of the most complicated and detailed CFD models that anyone uses, commercial or industrial.”

Engineers use HPC resources on demand from OSC (rightly so, through a portal called OSC OnDemand). OSC OnDemand includes clusters running Intel Xeon processors. Its latest deployment – a cluster called Pitzer – includes 658 Dell EMC PowerEdge nodes with Intel Xeon 8268 and 6148 processors. Using these heavy-duty HPC environments has enabled D2H to reduce the number of wind tunnel tests by real conditions, which are costly in terms of time and money.

“They had already tested a vehicle in the wind tunnel,” Davies said of a recent manufacturer. “The planning and execution of the tests took months, and I would estimate it cost them between $ 30,000 and $ 40,000. They gave us the same CFD on OSC problem and we solved it in a few days at a cost of a few thousand dollars, proving that CFD testing would have been much faster and more profitable, without harming the business at all. accuracy of results.

Initially, D2H had only planned to use OSC resources as a back-up, following a suggestion from a new employee from OSC territory – but results on the ground soon led D2H to elevate CSOs have a leading role.

“Over the past year, OSC has gotten ahead, and comfortably,” Davies said. “True on-demand service with reduced wait times is unique. We don’t have that anywhere else. And that’s what keeps OSC ahead of everyone else right now. … It’s always a good thing for us to have two vendors, but at the moment OSC is the strongest proposition and is our preferred vendor of HPC resources.
