MANILA, Philippines – The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan faction led by Senator Manny Pacquiao has officially named the boxer-turned-senator as presidential candidate and flag bearer for the 2022 election.
This was revealed during what the faction claimed to be the party’s 11th National Assembly, which was held on Sunday afternoon. Much of the meeting was held online, with the party claiming that “99%” of its base and partners were in attendance virtually.
“Yes I accept [the nomination,]”Pacquiao said in response.
It comes just weeks after the opposing faction’s own National Assembly.
Earlier in September, the rival faction of the party led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi officially named Senator Bong Go and President Rodrigo Duterte as presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2022 elections.
On September 8, Cusi also filed a petition urging the Elections Commission to declare the faction led by Pacquiao illegal.
The Elections Commission has not yet decided which of the two rival factions of the PDP-Laban is legitimate and which list will be the official party list of the administration.
Senator Pimentel has fanned the flames of the feud that was brewing earlier in the program, calling the rival faction “greedy.” The faction members also called themselves “the real PDP-Laban”.
“There is a good chance that we will win the next election. The real PDP-Laban will lead our government,” Pimentel said.
