Port volumes reflect the automotive rebound> Charleston Business Journal

The third time is a charm for the SC Port Authority as the state agency recorded its third consecutive month of record volumes.

The SCPA recorded the highest May container volume on record with a 36% year-over-year increase and 818% growth in port vehicles handled. While May 2020 in comparison had low volumes due to the pandemic and car shutdowns, the continued rise in volumes shows a steady rebound in the Southeast market, the SCPA said in a press release.

“The Port of Charleston recorded strong container volumes in May as our efficient operations continue to support the retail boom,” said Jim Newsome, President and CEO of SCPA. “SC Ports also hosted the CMA CGM Marco Polo in May, marking the largest container ship to ever call on the East Coast and signifying the importance of our continued investments in infrastructure.”

A total of 21,280 vehicles were driven through the Columbus Street Terminal docks last month, a significant jump over the same period last year. The SCPA has treated 230,855 vehicles since the start of the fiscal year.

During the month, SCPA moved 230,870 TEUs – an industry measure equivalent to a 20-foot container – across Wando Welch Terminal, North Charleston Station and Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal. To date, the SCPA has processed 2.32 million TEUs for fiscal year 2021.

The SCPA also handled 128,519 dockside containers, which represent crates of all sizes, in May. This number represents an increase of 31.2% over the same period last year. To date, SCPA has delivered 1.20 million containers to the dock since July 1, up 5% from the previous year.

For inland ports of the State, Greer Inner Harbor reported 11,280 rail movements in May, a 25.9% year-over-year increase. The inland port has handled a total of 144,459 rail movements since the start of the fiscal year, while Dillon Inner Harbor processed 32,409 rail moves since the start of the fiscal year. Of these rail movements, 2,318 took place in May.
