5A Sonora: Nogales

2020 review: Did not play due to COVID-19 protocol, joining Baboquivari and Catalina as the only programs from southern Arizona to southern Arizona to go the entire season without playing a game.

The Head Coach: Jake Teyechea, 6-14 fourth season at Nogales and overall. Teyechea is a former Nogales star who graduated in 2009 before moving to Arizona State. Before returning to Nogales in 2014 to coach the first-year squad, he was on the staff at Tempe Corona del Sol with Tom joseph, who is now the head coach of Santa Rita. Teyechea coached Nogales’ offensive and defensive lines with the varsity squad in 2015, then took over as a junior varsity head coach in 2016 while continuing to work with the varsity defensive line. In 2017, he led the Apaches freshman team and helped the university, which was coached by Kevin Kuhm, who has since returned to Rio Rico (where he began his head coaching career). Nogales welcomes Rio Rico in the opener for both teams on Friday.

Remarks: Nogales has six home games instead of five this season as the game originally scheduled in Rio Rico to start the season on Friday moves to Nogales as the new synthetic turf has yet to be installed in Rio Rico. Nogales has been 12-0 against the Hawks since 1997, when Rio Rico first opened. … Keep an eye out for the tight end and defensive end of the 2023 class Baltazar Pacheco, who has a good size at 6-2 and 230 pounds. He already has the distinction of being a captain when he is a junior. … The last college match played by Nogales took place on November 11, 2019 in Marana, a 29-24. The last varsity home game was almost 23 months ago, on October 18, 2019, a loss to Buena. … None of the current Apaches were among the team’s statistical leaders two seasons ago. The best players on this team are all graduates. … Teyechea is trying to coach the Apaches to a winning season for the first time since 2015, when Kuhm coached the Apaches to an 8-3 season and a place in the state playoffs. … Nogales heads to Desert View on October 8 to face the team coached by former Nogales head coach Robert bonillas, who played at the tight end in Arizona under Dick Tomey.

Nogales coach Jake Teyechea has taught a lot to prepare his squad after the Apaches missed a game last season due to COVID-19 protocol (Javier Morales / AllSportsTucson.com_
