The “professor” of fraud uses similarity of names in scientific articles

After arriving on the country’s agenda with false documents showing her a professor, Zulal Atalay Laçin was found using scientific papers from another Turkish scholar, with whom she shares a similar name, in her file, claiming that they are his, the Hürriyet daily reported.

According to the report, she deceived everyone with the scientific papers by Turkish scholar Zeynep Atalay, who currently works at St. Mary’s College of California, USA, by signing them as “Z. Atalai.”

The incredible academic fraud dates back to September, when Zulal Atalay Laçin started working as a professor at the Faculty of International Relations at Aksaray University.

In no time, the administration became suspicious of her because she did not give satisfactory answers on how she obtained the academic titles and applied for the interuniversity council.

On October 15, the board responded to the university, claiming that “they had not issued any associate professor documents in his name.” The administration fired her and opened an investigation.

Denying all the allegations, she defended herself by saying: “I taught at the French university in Lebanon… I was a teacher at Duhok University in Iraq…”

Investigators discovered that all of the academic documents she showed were false, even the document showing that she had scored 80 points on the English exam. Normally her score was 27 out of 100.

But investigators were mostly shocked by the scientific papers she presented in her dossier, claiming they were her own. All the papers were signed “Z. Atalay”, the first letter of his name and his first name.

“It’s totally annoying to be part of something that I have nothing to do with,” the real Zeynep Atalay told the Hürriyet daily on November 26. “I cannot accept such a thing. I will go through the legal process and speak later.
