DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Plans are underway at the University of Dayton as athletes acquire several rights to earn private compensation.
As of July 1, Ohio varsity athletes have the right to use their name, image and likeness to earn compensation privately outside of their respective universities. Athletes will not be punished for this, they simply need to inform their college of the agreement in advance. The University of Dayton says it has already received several requests from athletes.
“They are asking for more free market, they are asking for more opportunities for student-athletes to do things,” said UD athletic director Neil Sullivan. “We’re kissing him, we’re not going to drag him down, we’re going to run towards him rather than away from him.”
Sullivan says they’re ready and okay with the governor’s decision. Flying athletes are now taking training courses so they understand what they can and cannot do once the new rules go into effect.
“I think it’s clarity and it allows us to move forward and take it to the next level rather than keep asking ourselves what’s going on and what’s coming,” Sullivan said. “We know we can move on and tell student athletes how they can move forward as well. “
A major element of the executive decree requires athletes to report their agreements to their universities in order to prevent illegal agreements from taking place. Agreements with alcohol and marijuana products, games of chance and tobacco or vapor products are prohibited for athletes.
They have the right to use their name, image and likeness for commercial mentions, advertisements, personal appearances, autographs and clinics. Sullivan says the order gives them clarity and the student athletes, but it’s still new territory for everyone, so grace will be granted initially.
“They are entering this space for the first time like all of us, they are young people trying to find their way, I am not trying to hit someone too hard, we are going to work with them and make sure they are doing the right things. just to help them, “Sullivan said.” I hope that with the disclosure process we can capture this and education will help to capture it from the start as well. “
The new rules come into effect on July 1.
