Dehradun: On the first day of the two-day winter session of the Uttarakhand assembly, lawmakers paid tribute to the late Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, after which the session was adjourned for the day.
Devprayag lawmaker Vinod Kandari presented a proposal to name the Sanskrit University under construction in Devprayag after the CDS, which was approved by the House. Haridwar MP and BJP Head of State Madan Kaushik also tabled a proposal to name the Sainya Dham, being built in Dehradun in memory of those who died in the line of duty, after Rawat.
Recalling General Rawat, Chief Minister Puskar Singh Dhami said, “This is a great loss for the whole country as well as for me personally. I would always cherish our association. He was a simple person but firm in making decisions.
Former chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said General Rawat had taken important steps to control migration from border areas. “He started nut plantations in Chamoli and Pithoragarh with the vision of providing jobs for the people and stopping the migration from the hill villages.” The former CM, who is also from Pauri district as General Rawat, said he shares a special bond with him. “He paid special attention to border areas and the people who live there. He believed that better economic conditions in border areas could help prevent migration, ”the ex-CM said.
Deputy Opposition Leader Karan Mahra said General Rawat was an inspiring leader, who kept the military motivated. “He was a visionary who dedicated his entire life to the country. He made the state proud, ”said Mahra.
