CITY OF EVANS, NY (WKBW) – The City of Evans announced Monday that West Herr Automotive Group has made a donation to support the opening of the Sturgeon Point Marina for the summer.
Officials say the donation, $ 162,000 to the Town of Evans, is a direct response to the offer that the Town of Evans City Council unanimously approved on Friday at a special meeting.
Earlier this month, city of Evans officials said there had been a week of “significant progress” on the future of the Sturgeon Point Marina, as auctions were opened for the dredger. the marina shortly after.
Officials say the award-winning offer has gone to Union Concrete and will secure the use of the union. Dredging of the Sturgeon Point Marina launch area is scheduled to begin this week. The launch fee will also not increase ($ 15 per launch) for residents and non-residents of the town of Evans this summer.
“This is a surprising and appreciated gift from West Herr,” said Mary Hosler, Evan Town Supervisor. “It was imperative to me that the costly task of dredging the marina launch area was not passed on as a financial burden on our residents and their taxes. I am very grateful to work with Scott Bieler and West Herr Automotive Group. The opening of the launches will allow our police boat to protect the waters and will also allow pleasure craft, fishing and charter boat fishermen to access Lake Erie and Sturgeon Point as a regional asset.
“The Sturgeon Point Marina is a great regional asset and a place where families come together to enjoy water sports,” said Scott Bieler, President and CEO of West Herr Automotive Group. “When we heard there were challenges ahead this year, we thought it was an opportunity to show our appreciation for West New Yorkers. Although I am not a boat owner myself, I do know that boating is an extremely popular sport and it is a high volume launch area. People have suffered a lot during the pandemic, and I hope this helps bring some smiles to our hard-working community.
