YSU Athletics All-in on $ 1 Million Nike Apparel Deal – Business Journal Daily

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – On July 1, Youngstown State University’s sports department will sign a five-year, $ 1 million contract with BSN Sports to provide all YSU teams with game-day Nike clothing.

All 19 YSU varsity teams have been with Nike, except football, which had an agreement with Under Armor, also through BSN Sports. Manufacturer and distributor of clothing and sports equipment, BSN serves colleges, high schools and colleges across the country.

“I think it’s great for the brand, especially the recruiting when you go out to see kids. A lot of kids see this swish and they want to wear it, ”said Steve Pinciaro, YSU Sports Business Director. “I think it’s great for our department. It’s great for our children. It’s great for our brand to bring Nike to college.

Ron Strollo, athletic director of YSU, points out that Nike is a strong brand, but Under Armor also had a recognizable name.

“It’s obviously nice to work with one supplier and to have all of our student-athletes sort of wearing the same brand,” he said. “I think it benefits us.

According to the agreement, the match day shirts must be of the Nike brand.

To ease the contract transition, Nike has agreed to provide approximately $ 200,000 in matchday uniforms free of charge for the upcoming season, Strollo said.

In addition, YSU has the option four times a year to offer everyone on campus a 45% discount on Nike clothing through the BSN website. Normally the discount is 20%.

Under the previous agreement, YSU would order material through BSN and collect the promotional dollars at the end of the fiscal year, which is June 30, Pinciaro said. This money could be used in the next fiscal year at its retail value.

“We have annual expenses that we have to meet according to our budget,” he says. “The figures that we submitted to them, anything that exceeds this annual percentage of expenditure, we recover 11% for the department. “

The new contract for the Nike brand is only for match days. Other brands can be worn during training.

When it comes to the soccer team, the Penguins can use Under Armor cleats, gloves, and other clothing for their practices. “As long as we show up on Saturday afternoon with a swish,” Pinciaro says.
